I had one night in Galway and it had to be good. I was flying in from Philadelphia via Boston to Dublin and then driving across the country for about 3 hours to reach Galway. My goal was to take photos and eat at one of my most favourite restaurants, Ard Bia. This is not a wise itinerary but I had done it plenty enough times to know it could be done.
In choosing a hotel, my priorities were that it was fairly centrally located with free parking, a comfy bed, and it had to be inexpensive. I was on a budget as I was headed to Cuba right after a long weekend in Ireland but I really wasn't in the mood to be in a hostel or a bed and breakfast. I went through the mental exercise to not be too picky and that I was most likely stay in a Travelodge which is perfectly fine but then...
I found this beauty.
The Continental Boutique Residence is an 18th-century accommodation set in the Salthill, a seaside resort on the northern shore of Galway Bay, Ireland. Its beach consists of a series of small rocky or sandy stretches. Salthill Promenade offers views of Galway and the Aran Islands. The hotel is a 15-minute walk to the Spanish Arch and Quay Street in Galway. Complimentary WiFi is featured.
For $60 a night, I got a room with an absolute lush bed. It was a match made in heaven clearly evident in our matching navy and orange colour palettes.
They say the devil is in the details. This is very true of the decor in this boutique hotel. All the bedrooms feature bespoke timber floors, wood panelling, a flat-screen TV, a Smeg mini fridge, tea and coffee making facilities and contemporary tiled bathrooms. The common areas are also richly decorated leaving you feeling luxurious without the price tag. By the way, did I mention there's a private gin bar? Apparently, that's where the devil was hanging out that evening.
It was pouring down rain, so by the time I had reached Galway, all I wanted was a glass of wine. Four glasses later, I had befriended two girls, one from Sweden and the other from Poland. They had a very nice story about how they became friends after something in Galway and there was horseriding, one of them was Instagram famous. There was an Irish boyfriend in there somewhere, hearts were broken, then they got shattered and went away. The hot bartender went home so it was time for me to turn in any way. Do you see how that works? As I reached my room at the top of the stairs, I found one of the girls, the Swedish one, in the hallway, slumped outside her door. Bless her...she was so close.
In lieu of a run, I had a wonderful lie in my comfy bed. I found my breakfast waiting for me on my door (yoghurt, muffin, apple, juice) and I relaxed with a piping hot cup of coffee.
I wasn't crippled with the fear (Irish for being shattered) but I definitely felt the need to max out my time in bed.
I give The Continental a 5 out of 5 for Value, Location, Cleanliness. Bonus points for cool decor and a hot bartender. Check it out!
